Extractions Q & A

What are extractions?

Extractions are procedures to remove teeth that are causing a dental issue in your mouth. If you need an extraction as part of your care plan, the team at Capital Region Periodontics and Dental Implants will decide on a strategy to use based on your specific circumstances.

There are two different types of extractions:

Simple extractions

Simple extractions are easy to perform and can take just a few minutes. After numbing the tooth with local anesthesia, your dentist loosens it with an elevator tool and pulls it out by grasping the crown with forceps.

Surgical extractions

Surgical extractions often take more time and can require sedation. The team uses this method for impacted or broken teeth, which involves an incision in the gums to remove the tooth from below the gumline.

When are extractions necessary?

When your dentist or periodontist recommends an extraction, they tell you how it will benefit you and how it will impact your future oral health.

One of the most common reasons to get an extraction is removing your wisdom teeth, which are the molars in the back of your mouth that typically arrive in your late teens. This is done due to them causing pain, damaging your other teeth, or preventing them from crowding your other teeth.

Other common reasons for extractions are:

  • Severe tooth decay
  • Severe gum disease
  • Dental trauma
  • Making room for orthodontic adjustments
  • Preparing for dentures or implants

The team at Capital Region Periodontics and Dental Implants makes sure you know any other treatments or services you will need after an extraction and how to care for yourself as you recover.

How should I prepare for an extraction?

One of the first steps in preparing for an extraction is to visit Capital Region Periodontics and Dental Implants to discuss options for numbing and anesthesia.

You can also request sedation if you’re apprehensive about the procedure and any discomfort it may cause.

The team at Capital Region Periodontics and Dental Implants will give you additional instructions based on your health and the type of extraction you need. You should:

  • Inform the team of any medications and supplements you take
  • Inform the team of any health conditions affecting you
  • Get a dental X-ray
  • Take antibiotics if your dentist prescribes them
  • Avoid smoking before and after the procedure

Before your appointment, you should also let the team know if you have any illnesses, even a cold, as you may need to reschedule the extraction. Depending on the type of anesthesia you get, you might also have to fast for 6-8 hours before your appointment.
