Sinus Lift

Sinus Lift services offered in Albany, NY

Not everybody has enough healthy tooth-supporting bone to stabilize dental implants. If you’re interested in dental implants, periodontists Reed Ference, DDS, and Sean Ference DDS, MDS, may recommend a sinus lift at Capital Region Periodontics and Dental Implants in Albany, New York. A sinus lift is a procedure that allows new bone to grow in your jawbone to create enough height of bone for implant placement. Sinus Lift Q & A

What is a sinus lift?

A sinus lift, or sinus augmentation, is a procedure that involves lifting the maxillary sinus cavities to create room for new bone growth and placing new bone into that space.

The Capital Region Periodontics and Dental Implants team may perform this procedure in conjunction with guided bone regeneration surgery to increase the volume of healthy bone in your jaw.

Why would I need a sinus lift?

The most common reason the team recommends a sinus lift is to prepare for dental implants. When you lose a permanent tooth, the bone in the area of the tooth eventually dissolves. Bone needs the stimulation of a root to remain healthy. Without tooth roots, the supporting bone begins to deteriorate, making it sometimes impossible to place a dental implant. Before performing bone graft surgery, the team must lift your sinuses to accommodate the healthy new bone.

What happens during a sinus lift?

During a sinus lift, the team administers an anesthetic to numb your mouth before making a small incision in the gum tissue and underlying bone.

Next, they push upward the membrane that lines the sinus and add bone grafting material, either from your own body or from a cadaver. They also place a protective membrane to help regenerate new tissue.

Once the team sutures your incision, the healing process begins. Your new bone regenerates over the coming months and becomes part of the existing foundation.

What happens after a sinus lift?

After your sinus lift, your underlying bone and tissue start to heal. The healing process takes several months. Your new bone grows and builds the new foundation needed for implant placement during this time.

The team only places your dental implants once your mouth has fully healed. At this time, they surgically insert your implants into your healthy jawbone. This healing process after sinus surgery can take three to nine months.

After your implants heal, the team takes impressions of your mouth to create your custom replacement teeth. Your general dentist will then connect your teeth to your implants at your final visit.
